Wankel Rotary Engine For Aircraft - Wankel engines are generally limited to a rotor speed of 3,000 rpm due to excessive crankshaft flexion caused by the eccentric rotor centrifugal force. Szorenyi engines are not limited in this regard. because it uses a balanced rotor
Wankel rotary engines are the ideal choice for propeller-driven small aircraft owners and operators. Compared to conventional piston engines, Wankel rotators are small, light and have a high power-to-weight ratio. almost vibration free cannot be seized or knocked down and have fewer moving parts It's hard to improve on Wankel's design; That is, unless you consider changing the shape of the rotor... to a different shape.
Wankel Rotary Engine For Aircraft
The new configuration of the rotary engine – the Szorenyi rotary engine – was developed by the Rotary Engine Development Agency (REDA) in Melbourne. Wankel, but the rotor geometry of the engine will be a rhombus. which deforms when rotated within the contour of the stator. Szorenyi rotary engine cycle
Radial And Rotary
This geometry translates to a rotary engine with four combustion chambers. As opposed to a traditional Wankel three-chamber rotary engine, each rotation of the crankshaft produces one rotor revolution and one complete engine revolution in each of the four chambers: or a four-stroke power stroke. In contrast, Wankel engines produce one power stroke per crankshaft revolution.
A typical Wankel rotary engine uses a three-sided rotor to create clearance in the stator for a seamless intake, compression, ignition and exhaust cycle. Point A marks one of the three peaks of the rotor. Point B marks the eccentric shaft. and the white part is the petal of the eccentric shaft. (Image source: Y Tambe)
According to REDA, each of the four-stroke Szorenyi rotary modules corresponds to an eight-cylinder piston engine on opposite pistons or pistons.
The Szorenyi engine is also optimized for a multirotor configuration over the Wankel rotator due to the use of peripheral ports. Compared to the Wankel engine's complex side porting, the ability to easily configure a four-stroke engine with multiple rotors can result in a rotary power plant generating power comparable to that of an 8, 16 or 24 piston engine. In addition, the development of standardized modules can reduce production costs and life-cycle maintenance. Free speed Wankel engines are normally limited to a rotor speed of 3000 rpm due to excessive crankshaft flexion caused by the eccentric rotor centrifugal forces. because it uses a balanced rotor
New Four Chamber Rotary Engine Could Supplant Wankel And Piston Engines For Uav Applications
The higher potential RPM limit means that the Szorenyi engine has a higher power density than the Wankel engine, which can lead to greater range, durability and payload capacity. cooling inside the rotor and reduction gears are not required in airplanes and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with large propellers.
According to the report, the Szorenyi engine can be designed to run on gasoline. Jet fuel (exhaust gas), butane or hydrogen (because the intake and exhaust ports are well separated).
REDA also notes that if a pre-compression step is introduced, The engine can use diesel fuel. which is consistent with the concept The "single fuel" of the US Army and thus the engine was considered potential for military use.

William Kucinskiis, Content Editor at He previously worked as a writer at the NASA Safety Center in Cleveland, Ohio, and was responsible for writing case studies of the agency's system failures. His interests include everything related to space. Past and present military aircraft and driving technology definition of alternative engines It can actually be used with full efficiency. Wankel experimental rotaries today are the product of two companies: American Rotary Engine and Auto PSRU (see next list). The first builds the engine while the latter builds the propeller gearbox.
The American Rotary Engine is the in-flight sidebar of Atkins Rotary, a cast-iron shop specializing in tuning and supporting Mazda Wankels for stock racers. It makes jump-up parts and adapters for anything that moves. And the Wankel fits the bill. As Mazda parts ceased production, American rotary engines became busier and busier producing replacement parts. This includes parts as complex as its own. upgraded rotor housing timing cover and water pump housing
For aviation, America's rotary engine focus was on the Mazda 13B engine, and while American joked that every customer wanted a "500 hp engine that weighed 30 pounds," there was a standard turbo package with up to 200 hp being developed. American aviation specifics are spring-loaded shut-off valves at 4 pounds to avoid excessive pressure increase after landing or moving.

Big power from Chevy V-8s was a customer request at AutoPSRU. The LS-3 engine was paired with an SD550 reduction gearbox with a centrifugal clutch to reduce the load on starting and kick-back.
Powertrain and engine specialists Auto PSRU love to supply naturally aspirated and turbocharged Mazda 13B engines from the American Rotary Engine (see previous list). 200 horsepower ahead for the RV-7. Surprisingly, after a six-year drought, interest in Wankels is growing again in 2020, especially in the more powerful 13B option.

Columnist Barnaby Wainfan discusses the factors. That affects the longitudinal stability of the aircraft during various maneuvers. The designers made compromises to reduce the force required to allow the pilot to control the aircraft. But sometimes I do too much. and low handling force can cause problems as serious as with too much force What should designers do? The most important considerations are presented.

England: German engineer Felix Wankel conceived his rotary engine in 1924 and patented it in 1936. It had a triangular cam connected to a drive shaft that acted as a piston in a four-stroke engine. Wankel had submitted his design. Young NSU German car companies Wankel and NSU built and tested the first rotator in early 1957. This engine was most successful on Mazda cars, but it was also used in motorcycles, go-karts, air conditioning and other vehicles. and aircraft as well
Wright Aeronautical modified three RC2-60 engines for flight testing in the 1970s. The engines shown here are likely the first Wankel engines to power a Cessna Cardinal aircraft. Another used the Lockheed Q-Star to demonstrate the possibilities. performance and quiet flight The third uses a Hughes TH-55 helicopter.

Economic considerations (e.g. fuel burn Emissions) seems to have dropped a lot of interest in Wankel's idea lately.
