War Aircraft Replicas Kits - Wandering around the SUN 'n FUN Aerospace Expo 2022, I was looking for something new and unusual, and I found this: ScaleBirds' prototype P-36 fighter, soon to be available in kit form.

The P-36 is a World War II warbird that few people remember. Painted in US Army brown, the Scalebirds version is a tail brake that looks like it has a big radial engine.

It turned out to be a small radial engine. Because the scale of the plane is actually smaller than the original warbird, the eye plays tricks on you and makes you think you're looking at the real thing.

The aircraft is a prototype of the P-36 fighter that preceded the P-40 and P-51 and was used in the early days of the war. This aircraft, which is 60% smaller than the original, is a single-seat light sport aircraft (LSA) that will soon be available in kit form.

The construction is a tubular frame and extruded aluminum cladding. The control surfaces are covered with fabric. According to company officials, the prototype plane has just been assembled and is awaiting inspection before it can fly.

The aircraft is powered by a Verner Scarlett Radial 7U direct drive engine with electronic ignition and electric fuel injection. It has 7 cylinders and 124 horsepower at 2300 rpm.

Verner motors are manufactured in the Czech Republic and ScaleBirds is an authorized dealer for Verner motors in the United States. Werner makes five radials, including nine-, five-, and three-cylinder models.

According to ScaleBirds officials, the basic barrel and recess design will allow minor modifications to the front, tail and firewall wing structures to create a P-40A or P-40B.

Obviously, these two aircraft would not use radial engines, so other engines available for these aircraft could be the Continental CD 135, Viking 130 or Rotax 914 UL/F. Company officials do not recommend any bike that weighs more than 225 pounds because it will create weight and balance problems.

As time goes on, company officials say they plan to build other Warbird kits, called Lite Fighters, with interchangeable parts such as the A6M Zero, FW 190, P-47 and Hellcat.

Wondering what your fellow pilots think about the random stories on the General Aviation News website? Click on our recent comments page to find out. Read our Comment Policy here. Our mission is to bring new and unique aviation products to the market. Our primary focus is replica, retro and radial.

Consists of a small team from southeast CT. Our expertise is art, engineering, design, shipbuilding, robotics, manufacturing and of course: aircraft. We use all our skills and develop new ones to bring something new to the world of flight, which still feels very old.

Since we introduced the concept in 2011, our goal has been to develop a basic design for a World War II modular warplane. Many years were spent researching, experimenting, researching, designing, designing, building models, going to airshows and meeting people in the industry, to finally come down to a certain path.

In 2016, we partnered with Verner Motor in the Czech Republic to act as a US distributor and maintenance resource for a wider range of light aircraft radial engines. Since then, we've sold and shipped several dozen Verner radials in the US, as well as helped many builders on their way to installing the right radial on their projects. This puts us in a position to offer direct sales and support for the radially curved replicas we plan to offer in addition to those already available.

We are currently in the process of testing our first prototype aircraft, a 55% P-36 Hawk, and making design changes for our first series, which we call the LiteFighters series. We plan to sell the first generation LiteFighter as a kit designed to be economical and fun, which can be completed as a single-seat P-36 or P-40 sport aircraft.

We also designed and produced parts for a larger 2-seat aircraft: the 63% F6F Hellcat, which will be completed as the first in the SportFighters series.

In addition to the replicas we designed, our attention to detail led us to design many parts and subsystems that could find their way into other aircraft. We plan to offer a small catalog of the common components we manufacture for the general aviation market and possibly more. The day is near.

I didn't want to ignore the pilot's instructions. I moved the wing closer to the cockpits and carefully grabbed the roll that rested on the rear instrument panel. After swinging one leg into the narrow cockpit, I sat in the co-pilot seat of this small but menacing looking aircraft. For this fall 2019 flight, my pilot, Flying Legend USA co-founder Jeff Frank, helped me fasten a military-style four-point harness around my waist and shoulders before sliding into the front seat and preparing to show me what this Flying was all about it. The Legend Tucano, a ¾-scale replica of the Embraer Tucano military coach, might do the trick.

For the uninitiated, the Tucano 312 and 314 are Brazilian turboprop, two-seater military trainers used by most of the world's air forces to teach their aspiring fighter pilots the basic skills of air combat. After retiring from military service, some former Tucanos began to fall into the hands of wealthy civilians. Their raw power, aggressive handling, ability to perform high-G maneuvers, and relatively affordable price have made them sought-after toys for warbird enthusiasts looking to scratch their Walter Mitty-like itch. In this case, "affordable" is a relative term: old, well-maintained jets retired from military service, operating costs (fuel and routine maintenance) typically $400-600/hr.

Fortunately for the rest of us, there are services like Flying Legend, one of a growing number of manufacturers of replica warbirds that take enthusiasts to the skies. The company's Tucan copy has about half the speed, but most of the excitement of its namesake is as much as $70,000 and well under $50 an hour to fly. And after spending some time studying this burgeoning micro-industry in recent years, it turned out to be a fair deal - this feisty little fake warbird sits roughly in the middle of the price/performance spectrum occupied by at least a dozen other armies. Tasteful kit airplanes you can buy and build anywhere from $15,000 to $250,000.

As Frank reviewed the pre-flight checklist, the tall balloon lowered the canopy and locked it in place. After making sure that the ailerons, power ailerons and other control surfaces were moving freely, he fired up his 140 hp supercharged Rotax engine and raced to the runway. With the power of a garden Cessna or Piper four-seater (but much lighter), our takeoff was short, followed by a rapid climb. As we cleared the runway, Frank retracted the landing gear, further increasing our speed and rate of climb.

As we continued to climb in a direction that took us outside Philadelphia's controlled airspace, the suburbs below us gave way to farms, forests, and smaller towns. Frank explained that our destination was a quiet patch of rural heaven nearby, where he liked to show off the plane to potential buyers. He apologized for not packing the FAA emergency parachutes we needed, even though the Tucano had a +6/-3 G rating and was more than adequate for what he called "gentleman's aerobatics" rolls, hammer stalls, and loops. wear for such maneuvers. However, he assured me that we would have a lot of fun doing stalls, sharp turns, and other maneuvers that we were allowed to do without gutters on the plane.

When the traffic monitor mode on the nav screen showed only a few distant aircraft in the area with no collision potential, Frank told me to take the controls. I slid my feet onto the rudder pedals and lightly gripped the military-style button-embellished control stick handle and made a few smooth turns to get a feel for the plane. Compared to the sober handling of the Cessna 172 and 182 I usually fly, the Tucan's response to my input was enthusiastic; vivid, precise and smooth. For non-pilots, you can imagine what it must have been like for Porsche to build airplanes.

Within seconds, the little ship triggered every Top Gun fantasy I've ever possessed. Shaking an imaginary opponent with Split S-turn,
